Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and Root Planing

When plaque and tartar build up beneath the gumline, a standard dental cleaning isn’t enough. Our office offers scaling and root planing—a deep cleaning treatment that targets the source of gum disease and promotes healing. This non-surgical procedure is often the first step in restoring gum health and preventing further damage.

What Is Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing is a two-part procedure used to treat the early stages of periodontal disease (also known as gingivitis or mild periodontitis). It involves:

  • Scaling: Removing plaque, tartar, and bacteria from below the gumline
  • Root Planing: Smoothing the surfaces of the tooth roots to discourage future buildup and help the gums reattach

This treatment helps reduce inflammation, shrink periodontal pockets, and halt the progression of gum disease.

What to Expect During and After Treatment

The procedure is typically performed over one or two visits, sometimes using local anesthesia for comfort. Depending on the severity of the case, we may treat one quadrant of your mouth at a time.

After your appointment, you may experience mild sensitivity or soreness, which usually subsides within a few days. Our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions and may recommend antimicrobial rinses or follow-up maintenance.

Without treatment, gum disease can lead to bone loss, gum recession, and even tooth loss. Scaling and root planing is a proactive way to preserve your natural teeth and protect your long-term oral health.
