What Is OralID®?
OralID is a handheld fluorescence technology used during oral cancer screenings. While traditional visual exams rely on surface-level observation, OralID uses a special blue light to illuminate changes beneath the surface of your oral tissues. Healthy tissue naturally appears dark under this light, while suspicious or abnormal areas stand out as bright white or fluorescent.
This powerful tool allows us to detect early signs of oral cancer, precancerous lesions, or other tissue irregularities that might otherwise go unnoticed.
How the OralID Exam Works
OralID is completely painless, non-invasive, and takes only a few minutes. Here's how we use it during your screening:
- We dim the lights in the exam room
- A special pair of eyewear is provided to filter the light appropriately
- We shine the OralID’s blue light into your mouth
- We observe your tissues for any fluorescent irregularities
The exam is safe for all patients and is typically included in your regular checkup schedule. No dyes or rinses are required.
